9/15/2023 0 Comments Maya subscriptionHow could you keep a straight face and call that an upgrade? What have the Maya engineers been working on for the past year? I can’t believe they’re not working on any new features, and if they’re not ready at this time, don’t insult the whole industry by calling this a new release of the software.I feel like I have paid $3000 (~$4/day) for a part in the street crowd in “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, and not only have I paid for a minor role in the production, but all the new extras signing up are getting the same part for $1000. Having been around for awhile, I have to say Maya 2010 lowers the bar for a software version upgrade by an order of magnitude. I remember the first time Maya was rolled out at Siggraph and I watched as it became more powerful over the years. I’ve been around long enough to have watched as Wavefront, TDI, and Alias merged during the early and mid 1990’s to become what is now Maya. Since when are additional sample scenes and tutorials counted in a new features list? They have bundled some other software that you may or may not need, they have added a couple of minor features, and they have added a few more tutorials and sample scenes. If one peruses the “New Features” section of Maya 2010 you will find pitifully little. Dropping the value of my purchase by $3K is one thing, but even more disappointing is what I’m getting for my subscription dollars. Having worked w/Lightwave for the past decade or so, its taking some time to make the switch. On the positive side, I’ve become very fond of Maya - it is powerful yet has an elegant complexity that fits well w/the way I work. To say the least, the $3000 is tough to swallow, but as bad events go, its only money. Of course I contacted my reseller and even an Autodesk salesperson about some kind of compensation, but I didn’t have high expectations, and those have been met. For everyday of almost the next 2 years, I will be paying about 3x the cost of what the new subscribers will pay for their subscriptions. If I had waited about 10 weeks, my purchase would’ve cost about $3000 less. I was even contacted by an ADesk representative to make sure all my questions were answered. I spent a couple of months budgeting for the purchase and researching the various purchase options of Maya (which were not fully elucidated on the AD website). Previous to that time, I’d been using Lightwave for about 10 years. In May, I purchased Maya Unlimited w/a 2 year service contract for just under $8K US.
